LOKOKON is an illustrator who seeks for the “scent of the sun” while drawing. She was born on the Southern Island of Japan, but also grew up in Brazil, USA and Germany. Later for university, she moved to Canada on her own.
She couldn’t forget the fairly tale-like landscapes and buildings of Europe and that led her to be based in Berlin, Germany today.
The childhood experiences of…
Watching a red balloon floating away from the parent’s small apartment …
Finding a dead parrot in the playground of an elementary school …
Eating brightly colored cupcakes at a friends’ birthday party …
Smelling apple fields on the way back from high school …
Watching her son explore the world …
are her inspirations.

A bit more about me:
Education:
I graduated from University of Toronto in 2009 with BA in Arts Management and Fine Arts. During my studies, I have also spent one semester as an exchange student at the University of Arts, Berlin (UDK). After graduation, I worked in a library for 3 years. I had some free time after work, so I took one continuing studies course on children’s book illustration to see if I like it or not and it was wonderful! The course is taught by Geraldo Valerio. He is a great illustrator and definitely a wonderful and caring person.
I have learned a lot from him and I am very thankful.
About my name:
My real is Risa Kusumoto, but I decided to call myself LOKOKON. I imagine this name LOKOKON as a name of a country where I create what I want to create with my husband and my son, because I feel that I am not the only person who is making what I am making.
Tools I illustrate with:
Watercolor, color pencil, charcoal, acrylic, sumi-ink, collage, Photoshop and Illustrator
Experience:
I am still quite new to this world. I recently illustrated one children’s poetry book, In the Swamp, In the Swamp, Oh Yeah in the Swamp by Ruth Ryan. I have also redrawn a mascot fishes for the German kids therapy center, Agapeo
Subjects of Interest:
I like working with endlessly varied themes, but especially nature and humor!
What can I do for you?:
I can adjust my drawing/painting methods and media upon what is required. I can illustrate for anything that needs an illustration. Books, magazines, cards, etc … I also like doodling on my washroom walls, shoes, my feet… and much more.
Other interests:
Whenever I have time, I love to travel and go camping. On a daily basis, I enjoy going for a walk with my little boy and my husband around our neighborhood. We always discover something new!
